I joined Toastmasters in January 2011 for one reason only: to practice speaking in front of an audience. I didn't expect to learn anything. I didn't even expect to become a better speaker! Fortunately, my fellow Toastmasters took the time and effort to show me that I DID have room for improvement. As I ventured beyond my comfort zone to participate in contests and trainings, I soon learned that my club was not an anomaly -- District 4 is home to thousands of friendly, supportive people who not only work to develop their own skills, but take pride in giving back to the community. The countless role models I met taught me that Toastmasters offers limitless possibilities for personal growth, and showed me that everyone has a contribution to make.

Which way do you want to grow this year?

District 4 is close to my heart. It has given me tremendous opportunities to stretch myself and learn every day. To me, Toastmasters is a great platform to open up, explore and share. My personal journey in Toastmasters has been very rewarding. T. S Eliot sums it up beautifully for me "If you aren't in over your head, how do you know how tall you are?"

I owe it to Toastmasters and particularly to our District for a myriad of interesting possibilities. And this year, it has provided me with a new opportunity to help others as they start their new adventures. I am excited to share my story, my journey and help others create their own great journeys at Toastmasters. While my reason to join Toastmasters was unclear, the reason to stay on is very clear. The Toastmasters journey has much to offer every member and I would love to help each member make his/her journey eventful.

Moments of Truth

Constructive feedback is the greatest gift we can give in Toastmasters. Just as you take time to evaluate speakers and functionaries at a regular meeting, take time to evaluate the overall health of your club. Does your club provide a welcoming, supportive environment for members to achieve their goals? Are members getting what they need and want from the club?

The Moments of Truth module from The Successful Club Series is an excellent place to start. This special presentation outlines six key criteria for sustaining a strong and healthy club. How does your club measure up? What can you do to improve?
